  Biography

It took Rebecca a whole year to convince her parents that she was ready for violin lessons, but her persistence paid off.  At  5 she started classical violin training with Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.  She discovered Scottish fiddling at a Suzuki Violin Camp in 2000, but didn't take any Scottish fiddle lessons until 2004.

In 2005, at age 13, she won the Junior Division of the U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Competition, which was judged by Bonnie Rideout, Jan Tappan and Janny Kirk.  In 2006 Rebecca recorded her first CD, The Call.   Rebecca received a a State level piano ensemble medal in 2007, and in both 2007 and 2008, she has received the Corvallis Folklore Society Music Award given to the high school student who best exemplifies the performance of music in the folk tradition and the Goldie Rogers Award for original music composition.   In 2008, Rebecca was selected to play in the Oregon All-State Honors Orchestra and will be traveling to Italy with the Camerata Strings Orchestra.

Rebecca has been invited to play in Scottish Festivals and gatherings throughout Oregon, Washington and California.  She has performed with Alasdair Fraser and the San Francisco Scottish Fiddlers, with Brenda Stubbert and Richard Wood in Cape Breton, with Calum MacKinnon and Cali McKasson , and with Molly's Revenge, Hanneke Cassel, Ryan McKasson, Hanz Araki and Jamie Laval. She has been on Public Radio during the Mist Covered Mountain Celtic radio show and has performed featured concerts at the Oregon and Eugene Scottish Heritage Festivals, Northwest Folklife Festival, and Yachats Celtic Music Festival.

Rebecca shares her music with the community as well, playing at local farmers markets, assisted living facilities and retirement communities, schools, churches and private gatherings.  In addition to playing the violin and piano, she loves to sing in the Heart of the Valley Children's Choir with which she traveled to China in 2005.  She has performed with the Willamette Chamber Orchestra as concert master and soloist, is currently part of the Svegliato Quintet, participates in high school orchestra, and has fun fiddling at the local Celtic jam session.

In the words of Calum MacKinnon, “It is evident from her playing . . . that Rebecca has listened hard to and absorbed the techniques of some of the greatest fiddlers alive today including Alasdair Fraser and Natalie MacMaster who are two of her heroes. But amazingly for someone so young, she has also developed her own style.”

You are invited to listen to Rebecca on her CD and in concert.  See her schedule for details.
